Research Interests

I am an Assistant Professor at the College of William & Mary (Go Tribe!).  My research interests are in the study of visual perception and memory:

The Perception of Height

Why do we perceive heights differently from the top than the bottom?

Does fear play a role in our perception of heights from the top? What about general arousal?

Do people with a specific fear of heights (acrophobics) show an increase in height perception?

The Perception of Distance and Slant

What factors influence our perception of distal extents and slant?

For instance, does mood change our perception of hills?  Do sad people see hills as steeper?

Are the same factors influential in virtual environments?

Episodic Memory Encoding and Retrieval

Which aspects of the environment present at encoding can be useful cues for later retrieval of learned information?

Do these cues need to be reinstated at retrieval?

Can certain technologies or interfaces increase our ability to retrieve learned information?

What are the underlying brain mechanisms involved in these tasks?

Applied Educational Research

What technologies, if added to a classroom, can increase or enhance the students' learning experiences?

Specifically, can the Tablet PC with its inking capability be used to enhance classroom instruction? How?

Can the Tablet PC be seamlessly integrated with other technologies in the classroom, like personal response systems?
